Progetto manutenzione straordinaria

Since 2020, the Reserve Authority has implemented four extraordinary maintenance projects with co-funding from the Lombardy Region.

2025 Extraordinary Maintenance Project

The project included the following actions:

  • Repairs to wooden boardwalks: Maintenance of the wooden boardwalks along the northern trail and part of the southern trail, including the replacement of wooden beams, decking boards and railing posts.
  • Safety improvements to the path leading to the birdwatching tower: The path had suffered partial erosion and damage over time due to water action, which had eroded the bank and washed away soil, creating holes and hazardous conditions for visitors. The works were carried out to ensure safe access to the tower.
  • Safety improvements to the path leading to the central trail: An experimental method was used, involving high-density coconut fibre rolls, to stabilise the path and ensure safe access.
  • Installation of a drinking fountain: A new drinking fountain was installed near the Visitor Centre in Iseo.

Total project cost: €57,020.20. Lombardy Region funding: €49,000.00. Reserve Authority’s own funds: €8,020.20

2022 Extraordinary Maintenance Project

The project included the following actions:

  • Restoration of embankments and installation of bank protection measures along the path leading to the birdwatching tower, together with the replacement of ramps to improve accessibility.
  • Safety improvements to the birdwatching tower by expanding the area available to visitors with the construction of a 12 m² viewing platform overlooking the water, which is also accessible to people with disabilities. The access staircase to the tower was also replaced.
  • Safety improvements to the walkway along the central pat through the construction of bank protection measures combined with a boardwalk to ensure safe passage.

Total project cost: €113,164.99. Lombardy Region funding: €70,000.00. Reserve Authority’s own funds: €43,164.99

2021 Extraordinary Maintenance Project

  • Extraordinary maintenance of the Visitor Centre: Repairs were carried out to address various malfunctions affecting the proper operation of the electrical, plumbing, heating and sanitary systems.
  • Maintenance and targeted repairs along the central path: Extraordinary maintenance was carried out on structures along the central trail, including fences and steps providing access to the boardwalks.
  • Maintenance and repairs to the viewing platform along the southern path: Damaged wooden components were removed and replaced to ensure that the existing viewing platform along the central trail was safe for visitors to the Reserve.

Total project cost: €37,767.18. Lombardy Region funding: €28,582.00. Reserve Authority’s own funds: €9,185.18

2020 Extraordinary Maintenance Project
  • Bank protection works: Construction of a wooden and stone retaining structure to stabilise part of an embankment in the western area of the Lama, near a viewing platform. Water erosion had caused previously dry ground to collapse, creating a safety hazard for visitors to the Reserve.
  • Birdwatching station: A new double-sided screening structure was installed along the same section of embankment where the bank had been reinforced. The area had previously served as an open viewpoint overlooking the Lama. The new structure was made using chestnut poles and bamboo screening, in keeping with the construction methods already present on site. Its primary aim was to minimise the impact of human presence on wildlife while allowing the many birdwatching enthusiasts visiting the Reserve to observe the numerous species of waterbirds and other birds that inhabit the area.
  • Supply and installation of a new weather station: A monitoring system was developed by integrating new sensors into the existing weather station to measure and monitor various abiotic parameters within the Reserve over time. These included an anemometer (wind speed or pressure), a thermo-hygrometer (air humidity), a pyranometer (solar radiation), a rain gauge (rainfall) and a thermometer.
  • Tree planting in the former warehouse area.

Total project cost: €34,388.78. Lombardy Region funding: €24,771.43. Reserve Authority’s own funds: €9,612.35
