AMPHIBIANS

The project to protect and conserve amphibian species (Rana latastei, Triturus carnifex) was financed through the regional call ‘Approval of the regional programme for territorial projects to protect biodiversity – Life Gestire 2020, consisting of nine lines of action to allocate regional and EU contributions to implement the Regional Council Resolution no. IX/3583 of 21 September 2020’.

The project has three main objectives:

  • Monitoring amphibian reproduction sites and amphibian populations in the Reserve, defining their conservation status, and formulating management proposals;
  • Containing Louisiana crawfish through the use of 10 double door traps, 90 cm long and 30 cm wide. The traps were emptied and positioned about every week, investigating multiple locations within the Reserve to detect spatial variation in the catches. Sampling activities began in May 2021 and ended in October 2021. A total of 19 interventions were carried out.
  • Maintenance of reproduction sites: restoring and deepening small wetland areas.

The results of the project showed:

  • a stable population of P. clarkii;
  • removal activities led to a drop in the numbers captured and subsequent stabilization of the population over time.

The sampling was limited only to a portion of the protected area. The numbers captured were constant, but limited to using a boat. Through analysis of the captures, the best moment for intensive trapping is in spring and late summer, which coincides with the reproductive period and greatest mobility of P. clarkii.
