Eel
(Anguilla anguilla)
This is a native species, primarily nocturnal and averse to light and clean water.
Adult length
from 50 cm to more than 1 m (females). Slimy body covered in mucus.
Environment
Still or slow-moving water, turbid, with a soft, muddy bottom.
Diet
Predator. Fish, frogs, eggs, molluscs, and even dead animals.
Reproduction
Breeds only in the Sargasso Sea, returning to Europe after 4–5 years. This species is very threatened, especially by river levees, which prevent their migration to the sea and back.
Observation in the Reserve
Common in the ‘lamette’ and sporadic in the ‘lame’.
