Carp
(Cyprinus carpio)
This is a non-native species originating in western-central Asia, but it has been present in Italy for many centuries.
Adult length
40 cm-1 m.
Environment
Still or slow-moving water rich in vegetation.
Diet
Omnivorous. Aquatic insects and their larvae, small worms and molluscs, but also underwater vegetation.
Reproduction
The eggs, which are laid in spring, are attached to the vegetation or underwater objects.
Observation in the Reserve.
Abundant in the ‘lame’ and ‘lamette’. Because large individuals are found here, it is feared that they are overgrazing the bottom, creating an imbalance in the ecosystem and harming the aquatic birds that feed on grasses and small animals tied to the underwater vegetation, especially in the ‘lame’, which is a closed environment
