Clouded yellow

(Colias croceus)

A medium-sized butterfly with a wingspan between 37 and 55 mm pertaining to the Pieridae family. The larvae feed on various legumes.

Distribution

The species is widespread in Europe, Western Asia, and North Africa. It is common in all regions of Italy.

Description

It is known for the yellow colour of its wings. The upper side has black edges, with light spots for the females.

Habitat

It frequents open environments with a warm climate, especially if there are many legumes.

Observation in the Torbiera Reserve

These butterflies can be easily seen in meadows with abundant alfalfa (Medicago sativa).
