Red-crested pochard

 (Netta rufina)

Once considered rare, it has become the most common duck species in the Reserve in recent years.

Description

The plumage of the males is striking, with a large orange head and small coral-red beak, black chest and tail, and white sides. Females are brown, but maintain the unmistakable silhouette of the males.  Sizes range from 54 to 58 cm, with an average wingspan of 88 cm. They are diving ducks, but also feed on vegetables on the surface.

Habitat

This species frequents various types of aquatic environments: marshes, lakes, and lagoons rich in vegetation, both on the surface and underwater.

Observation in the Torbiera Reserve

Since these ducks are a gregarious species, they can be seen in groups, even mixed with other ducks, outside the breeding season. They are relatively common in the water along the Central Route. Many individuals also congregate in the ‘lamette’ in winter.   In late spring, some females with their young have been spotted on the Northern Route and on the path leading to the observation tower.
