European Water Vole
(Arvicola amphibius)
Despite the name, this is a large aquatic rodent that loves environments with clean water and rich vegetation on the banks.
Distribution
This land-based vole is widespread, covering practically all of Europe and pushing east towards Siberia, nearly to the Pacific coast. Towards the south, it reaches Israel, Iran, and South-Western China. The species is found throughout the Italian peninsula.
Description
This is one of the largest voles, with a body length of 12–19 cm and a tail of 7.5–12.5 cm. Its weight ranges from 80 to 170 g. It generally has dark brown fur, but dark grey or black is also possible. The head is a bit stout and its muzzle is rather round. In the water, these voles can be confused with rats, given that they have similar colouring and size, but they can be easily distinguished on land due to their shorter tails.
Habitat
Despite the name, this is a large aquatic rodent that loves environments with clean water and rich vegetation on the banks. As with other voles, its system of tunnels includes the creation of nesting rooms and warehouses.
Observation in the Torbiera Reserve
Its presence in the Reserve is endangered by the brown rat.
