Citizen Science

Citizen science is a participatory activity that can be done by anyone, no matter their age. In fact, to advance scholarly research, scientists need large amounts of data and information, which cannot often be gathered alone. One of the main purposes of citizen science is to involve the greater public in research.

In recent years, the field has developed quickly, and many mobile phone applications can now be downloaded to identify the names of plants and animals by uploading images taken on site. In some cases, the response is immediate. In other cases, the photos, precisely georeferenced via the mobile phone, are sent to experts who then send the interested citizens the name of what they have seen.

All the data sent in are collected in databases that can be consulted by researchers for their studies. Some applications require users to be experts, but in other cases this is not necessary.
